Day 3 - Port Augusta to Woomera
The driving part of the trip kicks off on day three, with a 2.5 hour drive to Woomera.
Woomera is about half an hour from Lake Hart - a beautiful and absolutely massive salt lake that is always a trip favourite, especially for the kids. There’s so much space to explore and so many salt hills to climb - it’s a great place for kids to run around and have fun.
It’s also an amazing place to take photos, especially at sunrise and sunset. Seeing the stars reflecting off the shallow water at night is absolutely mind-blowing.
We used to camp at Lake Hart, but there are no toilets and we found that unfortunately our groups were having a negative impact on the cleanliness of the area. We definitely don’t want to contribute to the destruction of a very special place, so now we camp at Woomera instead. If you have a self-contained setup and want to camp at Lake Hart, that’s no worries. Just let us know.
Important notes for day three:
There are no facilities at Lake Hart, not even toilets.
It’s time to start fuelling up every chance you get. The longest distance between fuel stops today is 172kms from Port Augusta to Pimba, then it’s 113kms from Pimba to Glendambo. So make sure you fill up at Port Augusta and Pimba.
General notes for day three
-
248 kms
The drive today is about 2.5 hours, but most people will probably stop for a break along the way.
There isn’t a lot to see today, but by the time you get to Pimba it does really start to feel like you’re in the outback. -
Lake Hart Rest Area
Our stop for the night is Woomera Travellers Village, but we highly recommend heading to Lake Hart first. The day four drive is longer, so unless you leave early there won’t be time to have a good look. Day three is a much better option. The lake is amazing - you don’t want to miss it.
