Day 4 - Woomera to Coober Pedy

Today we’ll drive about 4 hours to the opal capital of Australia, Coober Pedy.

This is where we start getting into some really remote areas, so we strongly encourage everyone to stay ahead of our support vehicle and keep their satellite device charged.

It’s ok to stop for a break any time you need one - please don’t keep pushing if you need a rest. If we catch up to you in our support vehicle we’ll pull over and make sure you’re ok.

Important notes for day four:

  • There’s no phone reception for most of day four, so make sure you download something to listen to on the way

  • Today is the longest stretch without fuel. It’s only 74kms from Pimba to Glendambo, but then it’s 254kms from Glendambo to Coober Pedy. So make sure you fill up at Pimba and Glendambo

General notes for day four

  • 327 kms

You’re in the proper outback now! Keep an eye out for kangaroos, emus and camels on the side of the road and don’t forget to fuel up at Glendambo!

  • Big 4 Stuart Range

Our stop for the next two nights is Big 4 Stuart Range Outback Resort. It’s in Hutchinson Street, Coober Pedy.

This campsite has BBQ areas, a great camp kitchen, a playground, a TV room, washing machines and dryers, a sewage dump point and a swimming pool, although it’s probably going to be too cold to take advantage of that. There are two communal camp fires, so we will claim one of them and light a fire at dusk.

  • Noodling For Opals

At 6:30pm anyone who is interested is very welcome to join us on a noodling expedition.

Opals glow under black light, so we’ve hired some special black light kits and we’ll head out to the public fossicking area after dark to see what we can find. We’ve hired the kits for two days, so we can head out again the next night if anyone is keen.

Kids usually love noodling more than anything else on this trip and most of them are keen to have another go on the way home from Uluru.

The chances of finding an opal are surprisingly high and we can direct you towards a local shop that will cut and polish your finds for around $35.
