Day 12 - Coober Pedy to Woomera
One day 12 we’ll drive about 3.5 hours back to Woomera, which is just past Lake Hart.
Woomera is such a cool little town, right in the middle of nowhere. The Woomera Prohibited Area played a big part in the space race in the 1950s and the Cold War in the 1980s and remains an important Defence Force systems testing range to this day. It is the largest land-based test range in the Western world, at 122,000 square kilometers, or about half the size of England.
You can learn all about Woomera’s complicated history at the Woomera Heritage Centre and the Woomera History Museum. Both are definitely worth a look.
The Woomera Missile Park is also really cool - it’s an outdoor attraction that’s free to visit and has a lot of different missiles, rockets and military vehicles.
Important notes for day 12:
The observatory is run by volunteers, so it can only operate if someone is available to run it and the skies are clear. We will let you know when we arrive at the campsite if it will be open or not. If it is, we will head over there around 7pm
General notes for day 12
-
374 kms
The drive today is about 4 hours, but it will probably take most of the day by the time you add in fuel stops.
This is the last of the really remote drives, so don’t forget to take notice of how cool it is to be in such a massive country! -
Woomera Traveller's Village & Caravan Park
We’ll spend the night at the Woomera Traveller’s Village & Caravan Park. It’s located on the corner of Canool Avenue and Pimba Road in Woomera.
It has a licenced bar on site, as well as coin-operated BBQs, washing machines and dryers. It also has a good-sized camp kitchen.
