Day 7 - Erldunda to Uluru

It’s finally time to head to Uluru!

On day seven we’ll drive about 3 hours to Yulara, which is the tourist hub where we will be staying for the next three nights. It’s about 25 minutes from the rock.

There are lots of facilities at Yulara. Obviously it has the campground and hotels, but it also has a supermarket, petrol station, police station, clothing and souvenir shops, fire station, newsagent, car hire places and restaurants. You’ll probably surprised how big it is.

Important notes for day seven:

  • It’s about 175kms from Erldunda to the next fuel stop at Curtain Springs, so make sure you fuel up before you head off

  • The campsite is quite strict with check-in times, so you probably won’t be able to get in until 2pm

  • Keep in mind that the whole of Ayers Rock Resort and most of the shops/restaurants/etc at Yulara are cash-free, so you'll need to use your card

  • The area has strict alcohol laws that apply to takeaway drinks as well as alcohol consumed on premises. The campsite will give you a pass when you check in that will allow you to buy alcohol, so make sure you hold onto that if you want to drink.

  • There is a bottle shop at Yalara, but takeaway sales are limited to six beers or pre-mixed drinks per person per day. Wine sales are restricted to one bottle of wine per person per day. And you'll need that pass from the campsite.

General notes for day seven

  • 250 kms

The drive today is about 2.5 hours directly west.

Watch out for wild camels on the side of the road and don’t be tricked into thinking that Mount Conner is Uluru when you see it. It’s known as “Fool-uru” because it’s the first big rock you see heading west from Erldunda and from a distance it does look like Uluru.

  • Ayers Rock Campground

Our campsite for the next three nights is Ayers Rock Campground, which is within the Yulara tourist region.

It has a big camp kitchen, coin-operated laundry facilities, BBQs and a complimentary shuttle bus to take you to the local restaurants, bars, shops, tourist information centre and art galleries.

Most tour operators will pick you up from the bus shelter in front of the camp ground for activities like Field of Light and the camel rides.
